Let's start by saying the story and characters were pretty good but at times the story really dragged on for way too long and I lost interest after beating the "Villain". I enjoyed the game I really did but there are way too many annoying and outdated mechanics that really drag on the game. 10/10!Ĩ0h PlayedNow my score might seem low and hear me out. And worth every minute! There is really nothing I can think to complain about (well, there was that one bastard imp enemy in one of the final dungeons.) Anyway! DQ8 is everything you could want as a fan of the series, and is one of the best games of all time. This is an extremely long game, taking me almost 51 hours to finish. With lots of long games, I get fatigued at a certain point and have the thought, 'I hope I get to the ending soon.' In this game, I was taking detours to get extra-powerful items right up until the end, even at over 50 hours in. The combat, leveling system, and gambits for more powerful attacks meant that the game always felt rewarding.

This one however has some tracks that I'll always hear and think, "That's DQ8." I played the PS2 version, so I got the full orchestral soundtrack. When you play Dragon Quest games one after the other like I do, the soundtracks tend to blend together cuz they're almost 90% the same across games. There is a lot of comedy, a lot of accents in different regions - and who couldn't love the hero's best friend Yangus with his Cockney accent, complete loyalty and his COR BLIMEY! expressions of shock. Part of this is because the localization is so good, I think it makes the English version far better than the Japanese version (though I wouldn't know, I can't speak Japanese). Another thing, the world map of this game is seriously impressive, and there never ceased to be a sense of great adventure in the distances you travelled. Level-5 were knocking it out of the park visually in the 2000s.

It looks like what someone who'd played all the previous entries dreamed a 3D Dragon Quest would look like - the monsters, the NPCs and the furniture in the houses looked 'right.' The characters were also animated in a really ingenious and lovable style that makes it feel like a 3D Akira Toriyama anime. When I started, it brought me so much joy to just run around and explore the towns and forests, noting how they were laid out exactly like towns in 2D games, but with everything updated for a new console generation. The move to 3D with a third-person view did wonders for this game. Then this came along and was everything I wanted: the Dragon Quest formula, just with extremely high production value and a fresh perspective. By DQ7 however, I'd started to feel like the games were a little too slow to evolve. Dragon Quest is tradition part of its appeal is how, at their core, the games aren't much different between iterations.
